History of Ancient Philosophy

Course Description: This course makes a general survey of the history of philosophy from Thales to Plotinus, i.e., from 600 B.C. to 300 A.D., showing a rapport between Hellenism and Christianity. It also highlights a thematic division: World-Man-God based on the Pre-Socratic and the Post-Socratic period.

Course Contents: Deals with the philosophical views of Thales, Anaximander, Anaximenes, Xenophanes, Parmenides, Heracleitus, Empedocles, Anaxagoras, Leucippus, Democritus, Zeno of Elea, Pythagoras, Protagoras, Gorgias, Socrates, Plato, Aristotle, Zeno of Citium, Cleanthes, Chrysippus, Epicurus, Pyrrhon of Elis, Sextus Empiricus, Neo-Pythagoreanism, Neoplatonism - Ammonius Saccas and Plotinus.
