Alternative Media Movement

Abstract:

It can be safely said that some form of alternative media did exist from the time the so-called ‘mainstream media’ came into being. From the inception of mainstream media at least a section of it has been observed as failing to perform its designated role in society – inform, educate, and entertain. More so in the 20th century and the initial decade of 21st century when media came to be controlled, almost completely, by the wealthy and the powerful – culturally, financially, politically, and socially. Social movements felt abandoned by this dominant mainstream media. Hence, social movements have been left with no other go than turning to alternative vehicles of communication giving rise to alternative media movement. Present contribution aims to look into the various aspects of this media movement.
